A 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback with Coachwork by H.J. Mulliner
This elegant manual floor shift example is a testament to the R-Type Continental's enduring appeal. In September 2022, chassis BC36C underwent a comprehensive 20,000-mile mechanical service by renowned Bentley specialists. Of the 208 R-Type Continental chassis produced, only 190 were fitted with Mulliner's iconic fastback design no. 7277, making this car a particularly desirable example.
Originally finished in Shell Grey with a blue interior, BC36C was first delivered to William Herbert Harrison of Staffordshire, England, in June 1954. Over the years, it passed through the hands of several British owners, including J. Gordon Spriggs, Brigadier C.C. Fairweather, R.G. Seys, and Michael W. Sapsford. In 1980, Douglas Hamilton acquired BC36C and enjoyed its ownership for 24 years, even participating in the Continental R-Type 50th anniversary celebration at Silverstone in 2002.
Upon its introduction, the R-Type Continental was hailed as the world's fastest four-seat saloon. Its combination of speed, comfort, and exclusivity set a new standard for grand touring. Seventy years later, these qualities remain evident in this exceptional motorcar.
